Event summary:
The Fire Service reported a fire in the kitchenette of a basement unit in a two-storey residential property which appears to have been initiated from an instant hot water dispenser kettle. The occupant was removed from the house by a neighbour. They suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital by ambulance. Flame damage was confined to part of the room.

Outcome of investigation:
Fire damage was contained to the kitchen area near the unit. Fire patterns indicated that the fire originated from on top of the bench where the instant hot water kettle was located.
The supplier of the instant hot water kettle agreed to recall the product following Energy Safety's enquiries.
