The Asbestos Exposure Register (AER) is a voluntary register owned and operated by WorkSafe (and its predecessors) that was introduced in 1992.
It is a database of self-reported asbestos exposures from members of the public who believed they were exposed to asbestos, primarily at work. The AER was created for research purposes. There was no requirement for exposed individuals to report possible exposure.
Closure of the AER
The AER was closed to new registrations on 6 December 2023. The level of exposure and the health outcome for most registrants were unknown, which limited the usefulness of the information for research purposes.
Information from the AER is still accessible to anyone who registered on it prior to its closure. If you have any queries about your personal information on the AER, contact AERRegistrar@worksafe.govt.nz
We continue to store the information on the AER securely in line with our obligations under the Privacy Act 2020.
